The City of Salem is once again the destination for the Virginia High School League Class 1 and 2 schools competing in state “Final Four” tournaments for baseball, softball and soccer. “Virginia’s Championship City” is designated a “Spring Jubilee” site where seven high school state champions will be crowned on Saturday at four Salem locations.
The baseball tournaments will be held on Billy Sample Field at Kiwanis Park. Class 1 semifinals are scheduled for 9 am and 11:30 am on Friday with the Class 2 semifinals at 2 pm and 4:30 pm. A championship doubleheader is Saturday with the Class 1 final scheduled for 10 am followed by the Class 2 state championship at 1pm.
The Class 1 and 2 softball tournaments will be held concurrently at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex this weekend. On Friday semifinals are scheduled for 10 am and 12:30 pm with Class 1 playing on Field 3 and Class 2 playing on Field 1. Likewise on Saturday both championship games will begin at 11 am with Class 1 on Field 3 and Class 2 on Field 1.
The soccer semifinals on Friday have been changed from the original schedule due to the forecast of extreme heat, with no games being played in the afternoon. Class 1 boys’ semifinals will now be played at Glenvar High, Class 2 boys at Roanoke College and Class 2 girls at Salem High School with each location hosting semifinal games at 9 am and 11 am.
All soccer championships are scheduled for Saturday. The original schedule has Class 1 boys at Roanoke College at 10 am with Class 2 girls and boys at 10 am and 12:30 pm at Salem High, but check the VHSL website for possible changes due to the expected hot weather.
