Shenandoah University proved to be a thorn in the side of the Roanoke College baseball team as the Hornets eliminated the Maroons from the ODAC tournament last week. Shenandoah won by scores of 22-4 and 10-4 to send the Maroons home from Winchester in the best-of-three series.
Roanoke had lost to the Hornets twice during the regular season, 12-4 and 10-9 at Pulaski’s Calfee Park, and came into the ODAC tournament as the fifth seed while Shenandoah was fourth, earning home field advantage at Bridgeforth Stadium in Winchester. In Friday’s tournament opener at 1 pm it was all Hornets with one of RC’s highlights being a two-run homer by Salem native Parker Stallard.
That left the Maroons having to win the next two to stay alive, and that didn’t happen. Shenandoah ended RC’s season Friday evening with a 10-4 win after the Maroons had taken an early 4-1 lead.
Corey Coogan and Tyler Galloway had multi-hit games, recording two each. Galloway hit his third home run of the campaign in the top of the third, tallying half of RC’s runs in the process.
With the loss Roanoke finished the season at 19-21-1 and 11-10-1 in ODAC play. Shenandoah advances to the four team ODAC championship tournament this weekend at Capital One Park in Tysons, VA.
