The Salem High track team competed in two meets last weekend. Some Spartans were at the Dogwood Invitational in Charlottesville while others were at William Fleming for the 58th annual Cosmopolitan meet.
In Charlottesville Mitchel Taylor took seventh in the 110 hurdles and ran a state qualifying time. The meet was canceled after a two-hour rain delay so some Spartans didn’t get to compete.
There were dark clouds at the Cosmo but it was completed after one short delay that lasted about an hour. In the girls’ Senior Division Addyson Funk won both the 800 and 1,600 meter races and was the recipient of the Cosmopolitan Club’s scholarship. Quinn Bowen was fourth in the discus and Chloe Underwood took fifth in the 800.
In the Junior Division, for ninth and 10th graders, the Salem 4×400 relay team of Maekayla Scott, Caroline Huff, Audrey Harmon and Addison Hancock took first place. Scott was second in the 300 hurdles and Huff was runnerup in the 1,600.
For the boys, the 4×400 relay team of Demarco Patterson, Fergins Ciril, Elijah Rabb and Alexander Kasey took third in the Senior Division.
In the boys’ Junior Division Nicholas Baxley won the 300 hurdles and John Stovall took first in the 800. Tristan Noel was second in the 400 and third in the 200 and Austin Prosser was second in the 1,600.
Salem will be at the Blue Demon Invitational in Christiansburg this Saturday.
