The Salem High girls lacrosse team will be in action tonight in Vinton as they play the opening game of a doubleheader with the boys. The Salem-William Byrd girls’ game is scheduled to start at 5:30 pm, followed by a game between the Salem and Byrd boys.
The Spartans are 6-4 after defeating Hidden Valley at Spartan Field Monday, 14-5. Salem raced to an 8-3 lead by halftime and controlled the action after intermission. Eleven caused turnovers helped secure the win for the Spartans.
“This was a full team effort,” said Spartan coach Mary Schwartz.
Bailey Redford was solid in the cage for Salem with 11 saves, three caused turnovers and five ground balls. Rylee McNeill had four goals and three assists and Mia Potter had four foals and two draw controls. London Fralin had three goals and Anne Thomas handed out three assists in win.
Salem was coming off a 14-5 loss at Rockbridge County last Thursday. The Wildcats are solid again with a 9-2 record and they’re undefeated against region teams, but the Salem girls battled them to a 1-1 draw in the first quarter and only trailed 6-3 at intermission.
“We had a strong showing in the first half,” said Schwartz. “We were only able to control three draw controls, which made it challenging to gain possession against this strong Rockbrige team.”
Redford helped keep Salem in the game with 15 saves as she was peppered in the goal. Potter had three goals and Thomas had two for the Spartans.
