Salem’s Janae Blakeney placed 8th in the long jump at Radford’s All American Relays (15-11).

The Salem High girls finished fourth out of 23 teams in the Region 4A West track meet at Liberty University last week. Salem will send five girls to the state Group 4A meet at Harrisonburg High School this Friday and Saturday.

Janae Blakeney had a big day at the regional with a second in the long jump, a second in the 100 and a third place in the 200. ShaCoya Price placed fourth in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump. Price also ran on the winning 4×100 relay team with Tawni Hunt, TeAsia Thomas and TeArah Thomas. They won with a time of 50.90.

Salem had several girls achieve a season best performance although they did not place in the meet. The 4×800 relay of Raniyah Majied, Ellie Look, Izzy Donahue and Alexis Stover improved their time by 20 seconds. In the discus, Selma Marunica finished 9th with a throw of 100′  10″.

For the boys, Sean Tyree was 6th in the 400m dash in a time of 51.74 and is the only Spartan boy advancing to the state meet. Thomas Mundy also scored by placing 7th in the Shot Put with a season best throw of 47′-1″ but did qualify for the state meet as only the top six finishers advance to state competition.

Salem’s boys finished 21st. Team winners were the E.C. Glass girls and the Amherst County boys.
