Region 4D play opened for the Salem High softball and soccer girls on Tuesday of this week. The softball team was at Jefferson Forest for the “four-five” game and dropped a 14-4 decision while the soccer team was at Mecklenburg, also for the “four-five” game in the South Division of Region 4D, and won 7-0.
Laikyn Funk had three goals to lead the soccer team while Rosie Horne, Aly Price, Nadahlia Pollard and Brooklyn Atkins had one each. The girls advanced to a game at Jefferson Forest on Wednesday with the win.
The Salem softball team took an early lead at Jefferson Forest on a three run homer by Piper Furmage but couldn’t hold on. The Spartans finished the season with a 5-18 record.
All-River Ridge District teams were announced this week. In softball Salem junior Furmage made the first team in the outfield and sophomore Evie Van Liew is first team at Utility. Secondbaseman Yayda Young and shortstop Kayden Dalton are Honorable Mention.
In girls’ soccer midfielder Funk and keeper Karis Guy were named to the All-RRD first team. Price and Horne made the second team.
The Salem boys’ soccer team did not qualify for the region tournament but had some selections on the All-River Ridge District team, including Anthony Rugama and Elijah Clark on the first team at forward and midfield. Second team honors went to Joseph Serrano at forward and Graham Cross at midfield, and Brady Geary and Caleb Moshier made Honorable Mention.
