The Salem High boys’ soccer team improved to 2-0 when the Spartans shut out William Byrd at Spartan Field last Wednesday, 6-0.
Graham Cross got the first goal of the game about six minutes in, assisted by Elijah Clark. Anthony Rugama then scored on a header about six minutes later off a corner from Logan Lavinder. Anthony scored the third, assisted by Kendry Uzaga, and Logan Lavinder added an unassisted goal to put Salem up 4-0 at the break.
Clark and Lavinder added on after intermission with Sam Villegas assisting on Clark’s goal and Elijah getting the assist on Lavinder’s second score. The back line of senior captain TJ Fisher played well and helped Ronald Cortez-Hernandez secure the shutout needing only three saves.
“Overall a good start to the season and the guys are coming together as a team as we go into spring break,” said Salem coach David Atkins.
The Spartans return to the pitch on April 4 at home against Lord Botetourt.
