The Region 4 lacrosse tournaments are scheduled to begin Friday but the Salem boys and girls will both have byes. Salem teams will join the action next Tuesday, May 27, with the girls going to Blacksburg and the boys hosting either Blacksburg or William Byrd.
The Salem boys had a home game with Blacksburg on Wednesday that was too late for publication. In the past week Salem went 2-1 with wins over William Byrd and Franklin County sandwiched around a loss to E.C. Glass.
Last Wednesday in Vinton the Spartans concluded a game with Byrd that had been suspended by lightning on May 8. Salem didn’t waste any time taking control, opening a 10-1 lead at the half and winning 15-3.
On Friday Salem lost for the first time this season to a public school team, dropping a 9-6 decision to Glass in Lynchburg. Salem fell behind 7-2 in the first half and couldn’t catch the Hilltoppers after intermission. Parker Dallas had two goals for Salem while Jackson Jones, Jackson Wininger, Ty Hicklin and Holden Custer had one each. Wade Marble and Wininger had two assists each.
“We didn’t play our best but give credit to them,” said Salem coach George Revercomb.
On Monday the Spartans bounced back with a 23-3 rout over Franklin County in Rocky Mount. With the win the Spartans improved to 11-3 overall.
The Salem girls shut out Franklin County Monday at home, 23-0, for “Senior Night.” The Spartans have three seniors, Mia Potter, Grace Lane and Cameron Walsh, and all three had big nights.
Potter scored six goals and had three assists for Salem. Walsh had three goals and Grace Lane had two. Underclassmen Anne Thomas and Rylee McNeill had three goals each for Salem and Thomas had three assists.
“This was a great senior night for the Salem Spartans,” said coach Mary Schwartz. “Everyone on the team was able to contribute to the game.”
With the win the Salem girls improved to 8-6 on the season. Last Thursday they beat E.C. Glass at home, 15-8.
