The Salem High golf team will be at Hanging Rock today to play a non-district match against William Byrd and Northside. It will be a nine hole match starting at 4 pm.

Salem is in the River Ridge District and Byrd and Northside are in the Blue Ridge, so it’s not a big match as far as post-season implications. Then again, none are until the post-season.

“None of these matches really matter all that much,” said Salem coach Thad Snyder. “Everyone in the region gets to play in the region tournament, and then just one team from the region advances to state. So, there’s nothing really that important until you get to the regional.”

The Spartans played a River Ridge match at the Roanoke Country Club on Monday of this week and finished in a tie for second. Blacksburg won the match with a team score of 301, followed by Salem and Hidden Valley at 321. Cave Spring was fourth at 334.

Garrison Conner led Salem with a score of 75, followed by Daniel Poff at 79. Brian Hutton shot 80 and Makena Witt had an 87 to round out the scoring.

Salem also played a nine hole match at Olde Mill in Carroll County last week. Patrick County had the low score at 159, followed by Salem at 176, Pulaski County at 178 and host Carroll at 202.

Individually, Conner and Hutton carded 40 apiece to lead the Spartans. Poff had 43 and both Witt and Christopher Clemens shot 53.
