Swimmers win in Greensboro

Hannah Sells competes for the new Roanoke College swim team.

The Roanoke College swim team had a good day in the pool last Saturday in Greensboro. The men defeated Greensboro College and Bridgewater and the women defeated Guilford and Greensboro.

The Maroons recorded 14 first-place finishes on the day, including winning both the men and women’s freestyle relays to close out the day. Hannah Sells took first in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:01.14. Tanner DeBord (1:57.67) and Jorge Jara Lopez (2:00.89) took second and third, respectively in the 200 freestyle. Reilly Bird finished atop the leader board in the 100 back with a time of 1:00.86. On the men’s side, Logan Cale finished first in the 100 back with a time of 1:01.85.

Bird then went on to win the 50 freestyle finishing in 26.58. David Adarkwah followed suit with a time of 23.56 in the men’s 50 free to take first place.

Francisca Cifuentes recorded a first-place finish in the 200 back with a time of 2:24.20. Sarah Virginia Scott earned the top spot in the 100 breaststroke, clocking a 2:42.26. Bird (1:03.12) and Jacob David (2:16.50) rounded out the top individual finishes on the day, taking first in the 100 butterfly and the 200 IM, respectively.

Roanoke closed out the day with a pair of first-place finishes in the 200 freestyle relay. The women’s team of Bird, Sells, Tessa Kenney and Cifuentes clocked a 1:49.14. The men’s team of Adarkwah, Jara Lopez, DeBord and David finished in 1:36.35.

Roanoke heads to Frostburg State Friday for a meet with FSU and Mary Washington.
