Tim Sutphin is one of six individuals vying to become the next Salem Sheriff. On Tuesday, October 10, all six candidates will be participating in an open forum at the Salem Civic Center at noon. A true Salemite, Tim is this week’s Q&A participant.
Who exactly is Tim Sutphin?
A Christian, a husband, a father and an active community member of Salem. I am humble and have a caring heart for everyone. And I am partial to Salem Football as it has a special place within my heart.
Why should Salem residents select you as their Salem Sheriff?
I have a unique blend of business and law enforcement experience. I will lead the office and represent the citizens of Salem with dignity, pride, honor and integrity. I want to have a positive impact on our Salem Children by investing in them with our time, resources and efforts alongside the Salem Police Department.
What separates you from the competition?
My experience in business and law enforcement combined with working on the board of Freedom First Credit Union for many years. My degrees in Business and Computer Science allow me to operate the budget and run the office more efficiently saving the taxpayers more money. I consider myself a leader and role model. I am extremely humble and strive to be the example not the exception.
Where did you grow up?
I’m Salem born and Salem bred. I am very fortunate to be raising my family in my homestead with the same Salem traditions I grew up knowing. And one day I will be Salem dead.
How have you made an impact in the Salem community?
Having worked at the Salem Police Department, I was able to give back to the community first hand. I handled every call with humbleness and a passion for helping why I was there. Being on the board of Freedom First Credit Union for over 20 years has allowed me the opportunity to give back to our community members in special ways. I have helped coached little league football preparing the players for the next level. As an active church member, I oversee our security team and ensure safety to all.
Why did you get into law enforcement?
I saw it as a great opportunity to be in customer service and give back to the community I live in. I never knew what type of call I would be given (domestic, missing person or someone in need to just talk to) or what was happening in the life of someone being pulled over. I treated everyone the way I would want to be treated, and that is with respect. I never had a fight in my 10 years patrolling my areas.
Do you think that social media is a great way to get your message out? If so, why?
Yes, but with due diligence. Social media is the way of the future, especially for the younger generation. It can be a great way to educate the public and is a fast way to spread important messages. Social media can also be very dangerous – if used carelessly.
Where can people go to learn more information about you?
www.timsutsheriff.org or www.Facebook.com/TimSutSalemSheriff
What is something else you want people to know about you?
I am in this race because it has been on my mind and heart when I was at the Salem Police Department. I have a heart for service and would like the chance to serve my community in this capacity and make a positive impact. I will have an open-door policy for anyone and I will utilize our staff in a way to not only keep the community safe but to educate the youth and elderly.
If elected Sheriff, what will be your top priority?
Updating security measures for the courthouse and inmate transportation. I want to ensure the safety of the citizens of Salem and will be taking a hard look at the budget to run the office more efficiently and to be as fiscally conservative as possible. I want the deputies to enjoy coming to work daily.
