Wawa is officially making its way to Salem, marking a milestone in the company’s westward expansion along the I-81 corridor. On April 1, the convenience store chain hosted a community partnership event at the Salem Civic Center, introducing its brand to local residents and city leaders while sharing plans for growth and investment in the region.
The event, part of a broader initiative celebrating Wawa’s expansion into western Virginia, offered attendees a “Taste of Wawa” with free samples of the store’s popular offerings, including freshly brewed coffee, pretzels, teas, and lemonades. Wawa leadership also shared the company’s history and projections for growth in the area, including plans to open 6–8 stores in Virginia by the end of 2025 and up to 60 over the next decade.
Although no construction dates for a Salem store have been announced yet, the city is squarely in Wawa’s expansion plans.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Wawa to the City of Salem and the region as their brand expands to southwest Virginia along the I-81 corridor,” said Tommy Miller, Salem’s director of economic development. “This exciting investment will revive a portion of West Main St. and brings new job opportunities. In addition, Salem will have a trusted new brand consistent with clean friendly service and fresh food offerings.”
Each Wawa store represents a $7.5 million investment and supports approximately 140 jobs during construction. Once open, each location typically employs around 35 associates, the company said.
Founded in 1964 in Pennsylvania, Wawa has grown into a staple for fresh food, friendly service, and community involvement. With more than 1,100 stores across nine states and Washington, D.C., the brand is known for its signature hoagies, handcrafted beverages and emphasis on customer service.
Salem residents eager for Wawa’s arrival can expect more updates as site selection and construction plans are finalized in the coming months.
