The Roanoke College field hockey team was looking for its first win on Wednesday when Southern Virginia came to town. The Maroons came into the game at 0-2 after a 4-1 loss to Christopher Newport in Salem Sunday morning.

The first quarter was played to a scoreless tie, thanks in part to five saves by RC goalie Hannah Roerden. CNU would use one of their five first half penalty corners to score the first goal of the game. Two more scores by the Captains would make it 3-0 at the break.

The Maroons would be out-shot 10-3 during a third period that would see six more Roerden stops. With less than five minutes remaining in the third frame, Claire Eisenhart would put a shot on goal, after the save the ball rebounded off both teams before Emilee Wooten claimed the loose ball and deposited it in the back of the goal to make it 3-1. The goal was the 56th of Wooten’s Roanoke College career, tying her for the all-time lead in goals scored.

Roerden would finish with 14 saves while defender Alexis Wright added a defensive save.

The Maroons are at Sewanee for two games this weekend, against host Sewanee on Saturday and Rhodes College on Sunday.
