Speaker Series: Protecting the lands and waters we love: The Roanoke Valley is situated in a region of great natural beauty, enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. The Blue Ridge Land Conservancy (BRLC) is working to ensure that the landscapes we love will be here to be enjoyed by generations to come. On Thursday, June 8 at 7 p.m. at the Salem Museum, David Perry of the Blue Ridge Land Conservancy will describe the organization’s work to forever protect the lands and waters that make such a difference in our quality of life.

 

Health Coverage Information Session: Join the experts from the Local Office on Aging and Enroll Virginia on June 14 at 2 p.m. at the Salem Public Library and get answers to your health insurance, Medicare, and Affordable Care Act questions. Roanoke Symphony Orchestra: Pink Floyd—Dark Side of the Moon: The performance will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 16 at the Salem Civic Center. Tickets are $31, $34 and $45.

 

2023 Movies at Longwood: “Minions The Rise of Gru” will be shown on June 16 at Longwood Park. The movie will begin at dusk, around 8:30 p.m., and admission is free for all ages. 

 

We The Kingdom: Grammy-nominated Contemporary Christian band We The Kingdom is set to take over the Salem Civic Center on Saturday night, June 17 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25.50, $37.50, $47.50, $71.50 and $99.50 for VIP packages. Preferred parking is $10.

 

Senior Safety Session: Join Salem Sheriff April Staton at 11 a.m. on June 20 at the Salem Public Library for a presentation directed at seniors to learn more about scams. Sheriff Staton will explain different scam types and how to identify them and avoid becoming a victim. Refreshments will be served. Register at salemva.libcal.com or via phone (540) 375-3089.

 

Salem Fair: The Salem fair will be at the Salem Civic Center June 28-July 9. It will be open from 4-11 p.m. Monday through Friday and 12-11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.

 

Jazz in July: “Jazz in July” is set to make its much-anticipated return to the Longwood Park Amphitheater Saturday, July 15 at 3:30 p.m. The free day of live music features an eclectic lineup that once again has been procured by local jazz aficionado Lenny Marcus. This year’s lineup includes Roscoe McFadden & Friends at 3:45 p.m., Jay Ware Quintet featuring Gracelyn Hedrick at 5:20 p.m., Michael Hawkins & The Brotherhood at 6:45 p.m. and Hoppie Vaughn & The Ministers of Soul at 8:10 p.m.

 

2023 Movies at Longwood: “Lightyear” will be shown on July 21 at Longwood Park. The movie will begin at dusk, around 8:30 p.m., and admission is free for all ages. 

 

Salem Gun & Knife Sale: The event will be from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, July 15 and 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. Sunday, July 16 at the Salem Civic Center. Tickets are $10 for adults and free for those 12 and under with a paying adult. 

 

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit with special guest S.G. Goodman: The event will be at the Salem Civic Center at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9. Tickets are $47.50, $62.50, $87.50 and $132.50.

36th Annual Mopars In The Valley Car & Truck Show: The free event will be at the Salem Civic Center from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2.

 

Public meetings: 

The Salem City Council will meet on Monday, June 12 at 6:30 p.m.

The Salem City School Board will meet on Tuesday, June 13 at 7 p.m.

The Salem Planning Commission will meet on June 14 at 7 p.m.

The Salem City Council will meet on Monday, June 26 at 6:30 p.m.
