The Salem High girls soccer team saw their season end one win away from a trip to the state tournament. Salem dropped a 6-3 decision to the host Bruins in Blacksburg Tuesday night in Region 4D semifinal game.
The loss to Blacksburg was the third time this season the Bruins came out on top in this River Ridge District rivalry. Laikyn Funk scored all three goals for Salem but it wasn’t enough.
The loss ended Salem’s season with a 10-8-2 record. The Spartans won their first two region games, opening with a 7-0 shutout of Mecklenburg County. In the quarterfinals they played at Jefferson Forest and came from 2-0 behind to stun the host Cavaliers, 3-2. Funk scored all three goals again in the win while Emma Elder had an assist.
