The Glenvar High soccer teams will host a girls-boys doubleheader this Friday at Highlander Stadium in the quarterfinal round of the Region 2C tournaments. The girls will open play at 6 pm with the boys to follow.
The girls are the second seed in their tournament. The Highlanders will host the winner of an opening round game between seventh seeded Bland County and 10th seeded George Wythe. Glenvar is 16-1 following an 8-1 win over Radford in the regular season finale at Highlander Stadium last week. Gabby Barba had four goals in the win.
The boys are the top seed in their region tournament at 16-0-1. The three time defending state champs will open post-season play in Friday’s second game against the region’s eighth seed, Chatham.
The Glenvar boys have won 16 straight games since tying Class 3 Magna Vista, 1-1, in their season opener. The Highlanders have only given up four goals all season, including one last week in a 3-1 win at Radford to close out the regular season. Scoring for the Highlanders were Levi King, twice, and Ryder Francisco. Tyler Curfiss, Jackson Jones and Evan Harris had assists in a game played mostly in the rain. The win capped off Glenvar’s third straight undefeated regular season and sixth straight district regular season crown.
“Some of the guys have changed but the mindset has stayed the same,” said coach Josh Jones. “I’m very proud of what the guys were able to accomplish this regular season. Hopefully we will be the best we can be in the postseason.”
Friday’s winners advance to the semifinal round of region play next week at the Smith River Sports Complex in Axton. Both the girls and boys tournament semis and championship games are scheduled for June 3rd and 4th.
