ODAC softball is at Moyer this week

The ODAC is in the midst of its 50th year of operation, so it is pretty difficult to set new major records. But that is exactly what Virginia Wesleyan University softball has done with the Old Dominion Athletic Conference softball tournament set for this weekend at the James I. Moyer Complex in Salem.

The nationally top-ranked Marlins completed the first 40-0 regular season in conference history last weekend, sweeping through its ODAC slate at 20-0 to match the league record posted by VWU’s 2017 national championship winning squad. Virginia Wesleyan claims the ODAC regular season title and the top seed in the upcoming ODAC Softball Tournament.

This year’s eight squads begin two weekends of postseason play with regional pod-style double elimination action at the Moyer complex. Two pods of four teams will compete over three days to deter mine the two advancing programs that will square off in a best-of-three series — mimicking the NCAA super regional structure — for the conference trophy.

Play is slated for Friday-Sunday, May 1-3 in Salem with the highest remaining seed hosting the championship series over consecutive days from May 7-10.

Roanoke College will open play Friday evening at 7:30 pm against Lynchburg. Virginia Wesleyan and Guilford are also in the pod with the Maroons and Hornets. The other pod includes Shenandoah, Randolph-Macon, Bridgewater and Averett.
