The Roanoke College soccer team opened the season in Salem last weekend and didn’t allow a goal in two games. The Maroons got a win and a tie in the VBR Sports Roanoke College Men’s Soccer Invitational.
The Maroons opened the season Saturday night at Kerr Stadium with a 1-0 win over Stockton. Both teams played a strong defensive first half until Jake Berecz took a pass from Quinn Kunath in a crowded Osprey goal box and snuck the ball past the goalkeeper for the lone goal of the contest in the 39th minute. Zach Behe saved all three shots he faced including two in the second half with the Maroons playing a man down. The last shot came with less than a minute left to preserve the win.
On Monday the Maroons played Texas Lutheran to a scoreless draw on Labor Day afternoon. Zach Behe (1-0-1) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Maroons, making three saves. Roanoke took more corner kicks than the Bulldogs (4-1), while each team made three saves in goal.
The Maroons are on the road for the first time this week with a game against Catholic University tonight and at Methodist on Sunday.
