The Salem Museum celebrates the 30th Anniversary of Carilion Clinic Field with the Salem Red Sox!
In 1995 the new stadium opened and welcomed the Salem Avalanche to the field. Avalanche was a Colorado Rockies affiliate from 1995 to 2002 and wore purple and white uniforms. In 2003, affiliation changed to the Houston Astros and purple was changed to red. In 2008 they changed to the Salem Red Sox, updating their affiliation to the Boston Red Sox, which they remain today.
This pennant depicts Mugsy in a different uniform than he wears today, in the original Avalanche colors. This pennant is a reminder of how things may change, but traditions can adapt over time.
Visitors can see this pennant on display at the Salem Museum. The new lobby exhibit “The Old Ball Game: Celebrating 30 Years of Carilion Clinic Field” features artifacts from the 1995 inaugural season, and the past 30 years of Salem baseball history. Visitors can also visit the Museum’s Champion’s Gallery to learn more about Salem’s sports history. Salem Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am-4pm and located at 801 E. Main St.
