Cora Grace Sparger and Cora Robinson combined for a five inning shutout as the Salem High softball team defeated Glenvar, 10-0, at the James I. Moyer Complex Monday.

Sparger had 11 strikeouts for the Spartans and allowed just three hits before Robinson got the last out. Caitlin Wells led Salem with three hits and stole two bases while Robinson, Evie Van Liew, Olivia Crosswhite and Anne Crew had two hits each. Piper Furmage had three runs batted in, including the two that ended the game by slaughter rule. Abby Teubert had two hits for Glenvar and Amelia Gierke had the other.

On Tuesday the Highlanders bounced back with a 13-0 win over Radford at GHS. Glenvar put up three runs in the first inning when Zella Hayes and Abby Teubert were walked. Hayes scored on a throwing error, Hannah Street singled and Teubert and Street both scored on a double by Haley Leginus.

That was all Glenvar needed but the Highlanders put four more on the board in the second inning and three in the third to put the game away. Hannah Street pitched five innings in the slaughter rule win, allowing just one hit while striking out six as Glenvar improved to 6-3. The Highlanders host Floyd today.

Salem was also back on the diamond Tuesday at Hidden Valley and the Spartans got on the winning side for first time this season with a 4-0 shutout to improve to 4-3 on the season. Robinson got the start in this one and fanned 15 Titans in a one-hit outing. She also had two hits and two runs batted to lead the offense.

Salem has now won three in a row, all by shutout, and the Spartans have allowed just one run in their last five games, that in a 1-0 loss to William Byrd. The Spartans are back home today to host Northside at 5:30 pm followed by a 7 pm game Friday against Christiansburg, both at the Moyer Complex.
